Stellar.org is giving away lumens

July 5, 2016 Hello,   We’re writing with exciting news. The lumen giveaway program begins today with two notable initiatives: First with the batch allotted for bitcoin holders, then the Stellar Build Challenge will award lumens to people like you that build projects utilizing Stellar.   This launch is a big step forward for Stellar.org, and it’s accompanied by a whole site redesign. We invite you to take a look at the new How it Works section and a revamped Developer experience. Read on to find out more about the reasoning behind the giveaway program, and details of the Stellar Build Challenge. Why is Stellar Giving Away Lumens to Bitcoin Holders? The bitcoin-lumen program will test Stellar.org’s hypothesis: there are people in the bitcoin community who will realize the potential of distributed ledgers.   As early adopters, bitcoin holders understand how digital currency works for problems as diverse as voting, land titles, collaborative budgeting, and new forms of digital rights management.   Here is the results we predict our interventions will have: Read “Making Blockchain Technology Real: Why We're Giving Away Lumens” If You Hold Bitcoin, We Invite You to Claim Lumens We're giving away 3 billion lumens in this first round. The number you'll receive is based on the amount of bitcoins you owned as of July 4.   We took a snapshot of the blockchain at the first block mined on July 4th 2016 (UTC/GMT) and calculated the number of lumens given away to each bitcoin holder based on that information.   To see an example of the bitcoin-lumen program formula, see this post.   Be sure to claim your lumens by October 5, 2016. After that date, unclaimed lumens will go back to the community through initiatives like the Stellar Build Challenge (more information below).   If you use Kraken, Poloniex, or BTC38, please contact your exchange directly about the bitcoin-lumen program. If you use a bitcoin wallet, proceed to claim lumens.   Announcing the “Stellar Build Challenge” To encourage creativity and development in the Stellar ecosystem, we’re announcing the Stellar Build Challenge.   Stellar.org will grant awards in the following four categories: Anchors, Applications, Exchanges, and First-Time Submissions.   We’ll announce the first round of winners on October 1, 2016.   Build Challenge awards will be funded by unclaimed lumens from the bitcoin-lumen program.
